Measure the length of the shelf or countertop you want to install, in this example, it will be 18 inches. Subtract 3 inches. This subtraction is to stay away from the outer edge of the shelf or countertop, which is usually 2-4 inches. Add 3 inches for the length that is inside the wall. Our final measurement is 18 inches.
